Welcome to the Pauline Haarer Website!
École Pauline Haarer is located in downtown Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. We're a close-knit group with about 250 French immersion students and 20 staff members. We invite parents, students and members of our community to use the links in the upper left to find your way around this site.
School Start Up - Tentative Updates (as of 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 16):
Early this morning Vince Ready announced the BCTF and BCPSEA has reached a tentative agreement. At this time, the proposed timeline is that the language of the agreement will be reviewed today, then shared with the BCTF executive council tomorrow and brought to the BCTF membership for a vote Thursday morning. There will be more information forthcoming. The school district had previously announced that when teachers return to work, the first day will be a staff-only day and then our start-up schedule will kick in on the second day. Once I have this information, I will update the school calendar. Please continue to check the media, the School District website (a letter from Superintendent Dave Hutchinson was added this afternoon) and our École Pauline Haarer website for updates.
The office is currently open from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm Monday to Friday. As principal, I am at the school each weekday unless I am called away to a meeting. You are welcome to call the school at (250) 754-2722 or send me an email if you have questions. Please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I am able. As you get ready to return to school, here are a few pieces of information that may be helpful:
1. Parent and Student Teamwork, Resources, Events, and Information
I am updating the calendar as I receive information and have posted the September Welcome Back newsletter. You will find resources in the Parent and Student Information sections of this website. If you have suggestions, events, resources to add, I look forward to hearing from you. Also, if you have positive suggestions and ideas for making this site more useful to our Pauline Haarer families and community, please let me know. Here are a few ways parents are supporting students and families:
- Thanks to Gary, Mike, Brent, Elizabeth and others, a group of parents and children have formed a running club at Gyro Park (Campbell and McLeary Streets) from 8:00-8:30 Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. You are welcome to join them with your children.
- Parents are organizing playground dates informally or through the PAC email list. If I know when you are meeting, I can try to join you, even if only for a brief hello.
- Paule Dion, our new French Language Monitor from Quebec has arrived and would like to begin meeting students and families. She plans to join the running group Monday morning, will help post ideas to the website and welcomes your ideas for opportunities to get together in French.
2. Pauline Haarer Writing and Math Challenges
As I am new to the school this year, I am curious to hear from students and parents what you think is marvellous and amazing about Pauline Haarer. I would love to hear from you via email, letter or drop by for a quick hello at the school. I can post your responses in the display case and on the bulletin boards in the halls so everyone can read them when we are back in session. Vous pouvez pratiquer votre écriture en m'envoyant vos idées en français!
As all grade one through grade seven students now have access to Mathletics, you can challenge each other online. If you have a group challenge going at a specific time each day, let me know the challenge level and I will post the times so others can join you.
3. BC Ministry of Education's Temporary Education Support Payment
I have posted the link to register for the $40 per day education support payments in the Parent Resources section of this site. The process is simple: enter parent name, address and phone number, add student(s) name(s), school(s), and district (68 - Nanaimo-Ladysmith) and certify you are the parent completing the application, then submit. The student's personal education number (PEN) is NOT required to complete the application.
4. Supply Lists for Grade One through Seven:
5. Kindergarten Gradual Entry:
Kindergarten students should have received a letter in the mail in early July explaining the Gradual Entry process and schedule. The revised letter here shows how the gradual entry schedule is adjusted with our first day back at school. If you are a kindergarten parent and did not receive a letter advising you of which group your child is in for the first week, please contact the school and I can give you that information.
6. Next PAC Meeting: Thursday, October 9 at 6:30 pm in the school library
Thank you to all who were able to attend our short meeting September 11. If you are a new family to Pauline Haarer and are not already on the PAC email list, call the school or send me an email to have your name added.
7. Before and After School Care
Kairis Gingerysty runs our on-site Before and After School Care Program. Hours are 7:30-8:45 am and from after school until 5:30 pm. There are still a few spaces available.
I look forward to working with all of you very soon! À bientôt, j'espère!
